“As humans we encounter anxiety in the face of something ‘indefinite’ or ‘uncertain’. This work reflects the anxieties that surrounds the human condition, oneself, and one’s relation to the world. Humans have a need to create meaning from their lives, and the absurdity of the world and their own existence leaves them in a state of despair and anxiety. These ideas are investigated in this work through dark yet comical renderings.”
“Women have always been bombarded with images of the ideal body shape through the media. This has escalated in today’s era of social media with the pressure to achieve the unachievable via exposure to unrealistic images, often enhanced by photoshop or filters. We expect celebrities and models to be beautiful; but what social media has done is provide a platform for influencers to flaunt their flawless skin, perfect curves and cosmetic surgery, which is now more accessible than ever before. As a result, body shaming has become as addictive as our daily feeds. Beauty (and women) comes in all shapes and sizes; and like art, is subjective. This is what ‘Woman on a Balloon’ represents. All women have the right to feel confident in their own skin and embrace their beauty, otherwise… just like a balloon under constant pressure, there will become a point where she will simply burst.” – Paul Trefry

EDGAR SCHILTER is a Sydney based artist. Edgar completed a Fine Arts degree at the College of Fine Arts Sydney in 2008. His subjects of interest are decidedly honest, with recurrent themes of architecture, mechanics, technology and science. His work focuses on the methodical and meditative reproduction of detail in the hopelessly untrendy modern tradition of artisanry. His work turns the lens over the technical and structural and blends it with the patterning and textural elements often found in nature.

“The recent years have been a time of sudden violence, of irruption. Of heat, fires, rain, and flooding of unprecedented intensity. We have been locked down, and in. And as more and more news of gendered violence emerged, a deluge of truth irrupted.
Predictably, these events created space and cause to think and reflect. Through this time I looked back on the decades I believed the narratives that society created about me, and I struggled to reconcile my intellectual understanding of coercive control with the feelings of shame and guilt associated with my own experiences.
For too long, people and systems have made me feel that I deserved to be treated poorly because I am a woman. Made me accept commentary on my appearance, my behavior, my anger. Of course, the same systems and people responsible for this normative imposition are the architects of the catastrophic demise of our environment.
