ABSTRACTION : THE LANDSCAPE
Opening 20th August, traffic jam galleries are thrilled to be presenting a special introduction exhibition featuring the works of Roxanne Lillis.
Lillis' work utilises bold colour and texture, pushing boundaries and evoking powerful emotions. She draws inspiration from the natural environment surrounding her, imbuing the canvas with experienced emotional responses illustrating a transverse recount of the subjective landscape.
“My artworks are created following sketches on our acreage of virgin bushland on the outskirts of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. My studio overlooks regenerating bushland and the slow return of fauna. Oil paints and glazes are applied in layers attempting to capture not only the recovery, but the history of trauma. This has become essential in my mode of existence since the devastation of losing everything in a bushfire; seeping into my heart and rationale. The paintings, on canvas, are simultaneously philosophical and literal. My intention is to create ambiguous organic forms. The ambiguity opens diverse interpretations”.
“This body of work could be described as whimsical yet solemn, in an abstract expressionist style”.
