“You are not a drop in the ocean;
You are the entire ocean in a drop”
– Rumi (A symphony of love in the midst of war)
My work is borne out of a life lived near water.
I grew up in “The Land of 10,000 Lakes”, Minnesota USA. I was influenced by the essence of this place especially the waterways. The serenity and the connection that I feel near water is undeniably imprinted in my deepest memories.
I spent a considerable portion of my time at the lake, on, in and under the water. It filled me in a way that will never run dry.
On the weekends I would go to work with my dad, who worked at a Marine Company. I spent hours of my childhood playing in the boats and familiarizing myself with the many accessories of a life lived near water. These marine accessories, boats and hardware became deeply symbolic; creating a lifetime of personal iconography that continues to permeate my work.
In 2008 I moved to Perth, Australia, after a decade in the desert of New Mexico. During such time I established an influential relationship with the desert light, but I had no idea, the return to water would forever make its mark on the inner most part of my being.
The ocean has captured my heart and enlightened my soul in such a way that it will never leave me. The images and symbols that appear in my work are heavily influenced by this interpersonal connection. These symbols may present themselves in colours and shapes, a perceived horizon line, a boat or buoy or the subtle pink as the sun sets and reflects off the sand and water.
“Water is universally experienced and speaks to the greater connection we all have to one another; specifically, the ocean. We are all connected in that way.”
