Dollars and millions of them is the calling card of Las Vegas. Robert De Niro’s character in the film Casino (1995) refers to Las Vegas as “A place where millions of suckers flew in every year on their own nickel and left behind about a billion dollars. But at night, you couldn’t see the desert.”
Las Vegas evokes so many images; flashing signs, lights, roulette wheels, dead celebrities, macabre wedding ceremonies, money, glamour, playing cards, gaming chips and so many emotions; hope, desire, power, love, despair, rage, and all delivered at a cost and for a defined period. The city itself is one big symbol.
KATHRYN GALLAGHER’S work ‘Ace and Ginger’ captures beautifully the mesmerising hold this city has over its visitors, transients and inhabitants.
