”In the early 1940s Australian art and culture experienced growing pains, the colonial romantic yearnings and conquest of land had been expressed in lavish romantic colonial paintings and bush ballads for over half a century. Yet, the urbanised reality unfolding with modernity and progress was forming a new perception of landscape, a tension between space and the meaning of place. I can still see and feel these beautiful yet absurd tensions unfolding today, and this is what I try to express through my art” – DEAN REILLY
