Margaret Spencer is an Australian artist based in Victoria, working with a focus on abstraction in her artmaking practice.
Artist Statement
I have been investigating gesture; trying to ‘nail gesture’ rather than illustrate the
subject. Francis Bacon said it best; ‘the sensation without the boredom of its
conveyance.’ This is both an elusive and exciting idea that I have been playing
with for a few years. The scintillating state of suspension where you are able to
access a space in your subconscious, a space where your gestures are made by
instinct. This is a space not quantified by time, it’s a state I can access at times
readily and other times with greater effort and preparation; it will be a life-long
pursuit and as I mature as an artist, I am looking forward to it.
