Nigel Sense, a Wollongong-born artist, has a dynamic, instinct-driven art making practice which leaps from the canvas in rich colour.
Nomadic by nature, Nigel draws deeply from travel and lived experience, transforming the visual language of everyday life into bold, high-energy compositions. Influenced by American abstraction and 1960s pop culture, his paintings rework mass media, signage, tools and suburban narratives into layered works that are at once playful and socially perceptive. Humour and immediacy invite the viewer in, while beneath the surface his work reflects on identity, labour and the shared rhythms of contemporary life.
Nigel has exhibited widely across Australia and abroad, including participation in the inaugural Colombo Art Biennale. In 2021, he was commissioned by Porsche to create a custom livery for the Taycan, marking the brand’s 70th anniversary in Australia, and he has been selected as a finalist in major prizes including the Mosman Art Prize and the Black Swan Art Prize.
Nigel is drawn to the poetry of the everyday, continually seeking moments of humour, pleasure and quiet beauty in the mundane. Beneath their bold immediacy, his works offer a perceptive social commentary and an exploration of the human condition. More recently, his practice has been shaped by the visual intensity of travel, enjoying the heightened awareness that comes with waking somewhere new and seeing the world afresh.
