"Light and colour are the most important things to me when I am designing a painting. I work from photographs as I need to capture a particular time of day. I have many favourite places that I walk around with my camera. I design my paintings on my tablet piecing together many photographs, playing with background colours and literally painting with my finger. Watercolour is a very unforgiving medium so I need to have everything designed before I start. It is translucent therefore you cannot paint a lighter colour over a dark colour – you can’t change your mind halfway through. 'First Bloom' – PAT HALL Pop Up Exhibition is on now. Pat works with rich and vibrant colours to create her botanical watercolour paintings on varnished stretched paper canvas. This new way of working and presenting works breaks the boundaries of traditional watercolour art as the pieces are not framed behind glass but are protected like a work on canvas.

Q. Pat, your presentation is quite unique, unlike other watercolour works your pieces are not framed under glass but present like a canvas. Can you tell us a little more about your stretched paper canvases, and how you came about this idea and way of working? "Many years ago I was thrown out of a gallery as they said watercolours were too old fashioned and that nobody looks at art hidden behind glass. They suggested I switch to painting with acrylics but the thing that I love about watercolours is how you can see the paint flowing even when it is dry. It has a spontaneity that you simply cannot achieve with thick, sticky acrylics. One sleepless night it just occurred to me that there was no reason why I couldn’t stretch my thick 640 gsm paper around a frame just like you do with a canvas. It’s taken many years to perfect the process and my paintings are strong and waterproof. Many people mistake them for oil paintings." – Pat Hall 'First Bloom' pop up exhibition on now!
